he was in the youth group with my older siblings - i was somewhere around 5 years old.
my parents hosted a cookout at our house one night, and all of the youth group came over to eat and goof off. being the goofy 5 year old that i was, i didn't think a thing about jumping right in to a game of hide and go seek in the dark with these (much) older kids. it was a summer night - the kind where the sun seems to take its time slipping down the horizon and the fireflies are all around.
i don't remember much about this night - i just remember being chased by the cutest boy there... at least, i thought so at the time. i remember running down the hill laughing and turning to look at him to see if i could out run him or not. it was about the time that i decided i needed to run faster that i turned around to see ... myself running headlong into a thorn bush. and the thing is? that "hot" guy just stood there and laughed in my face.
i was so embarrassed. 5 years old, and covered head to toe in thorns. i sat, nursing my pride, on the kitchen table as my mom painstakingly plucked every last thorn from my skin. i didn't want to go back outside to play after that - and i never much cared for that boy anymore.
now that i'm older, i think - what bad taste i had then. he was at least 8 years my senior, and he didn't have the sense to say, "hey, little girl - stop - you're going to run into a thorn bush!"?? well, i guess that's a 13 y/o boy for you....
